We're here! (GO TEAM NZ!)
We left on Sunday night; WLG - AKL - SNG (the most direct route possible). I flew Business Class, to avoid being around too many other people who might be harbouring colds or 'flus, and that was lovely. Although despite the fact that Air NZ Business has lie-flat beds, I only managed to get about an hour or two of sleep. I also didn't really wear my mask (which I was supposed to do) because I found it really stifling, and hard to breathe comfortably. I'll have to wear one on the way back, but hopefully I haven't picked up anything treatment-delaying with my failure to do so on the way over.
Upon arrival at the airport, we flew through customs (seriously, it was so quick) and went to get a taxi to our apartment where a member of the property management staff met us. Getting a taxi wasn't the easiest though, because the drivers of regular cars wouldn't take us and all of our luggage (three months people, don't judge!); James (one of our house/cat-sitters) took us to the airport in his Wellington-sized Hyundai hatchback, so we knew we'd fit, but the taxi-drivers here seem to have a policy that everything must fit in the boot. So we had to find a mini-bus, but that was all good, because it wasn't too long until one came along (so, Mum, when we leave, we need to order one of those to take us to the airport).
Our apartment is in the Farrer Park area, in a nice building etc. However when we entered it, I was mainly struck by a weird smell, and how dark it seemed. There aren't many windows in the apartment itself, and for the windows there are, they look out to another building that's really close. So in my tired, jet-lagged state, I had a sensitive moment where, being aware that I'm basically not going to be leaving the apartment for three months, apart from going to hospital, I felt like I could see myself getting quite down feeling like I was imprisoned.
Peter to the rescue though, and he took one of his (three) trips to the supermarket/mall (which I'm told is 5-minutes walk away, so that's convenient), and he bought air freshener and other homely stuff, and we made a decision about what room would be 'mine' (well, ours for the moment) -- the 'guest' one, but it has a window (as opposed to the master bedroom which, although it has a en suite, does not have any windows). These small decisions / improvements, plus having a shower, lifted my spirits. It's actually quite a good apartment; two bedrooms, two bathrooms, three air-conditioners, and it's quite large, by Singapore standards (700 sqft).
The other thing that lifted my spirits exponentially, is that we can access Sky Go, so this morning we watched the Americas Cup replay (NZ media must be losing their shit today), and this afternoon we'll watch the Hurricanes play the Lions. I only wish my BLACKCAPS mates were playing a test series or something, that'd be a great way to while away my time once the treatment starts: tomorrow morning I have my first appointment at the hospital FINALLY meeting the people I've been in almost-constant email contact with over the past three months! It's just a 'family conference', I think to talk through everything, and to do some blood tests. I'll post an update tomorrow, afterwards :) x
